UPI (Unified Payments Interface)

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is India's real-time, mobile-first interbank payment rail operated by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). It processed over 13 billion transactions per month by late 2024, making it the world's largest real-time payment system. In distribution, UPI has fundamentally changed how money moves between retailers, distributors, and brands.

Before UPI, cash dominated the Indian GT channel. A delivery boy would collect Rs 5,000-15,000 in cash per day across 30+ outlets, creating reconciliation headaches, theft risk, and banking overhead. Today, a growing share of retailers pay via UPI at the point of delivery, with the payment instantly reflecting in the distributor's account. This shift enables real-time outstanding tracking, same-day credit-limit refresh, and cleaner invoice reconciliation.

Distribution platforms integrate UPI payment links directly into digital invoices, the retailer taps the link, pays via Google Pay, PhonePe, or any UPI app, and the payment auto-maps to the specific invoice. This eliminates the painful manual matching of bank credits to invoices that accounts teams in every Indian distribution company dread.
