A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional matrix barcode that can encode up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, roughly 100x the capacity of a standard barcode. In Indian distribution, QR codes serve three major functions: UPI payment collection, product traceability, and anti-counterfeiting. Post-demonetization, QR-based UPI payments became ubiquitous, even the smallest kirana store now has a printed QR code for digital collection.
For FMCG brands, on-pack QR codes are increasingly used for consumer engagement (scan to verify authenticity, access recipes, or join loyalty programs) and for supply-chain traceability. A QR code on a milk packet can encode the batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date, plant code, and a unique serial identifier, enabling product recall down to the individual unit if needed.
In distribution operations, QR codes on e-invoices (mandatory for B2B transactions above Rs 5 crore turnover) contain IRN and invoice details, allowing instant verification by the recipient or tax authorities without manual data entry.
Real-world example
Nestlé prints a unique QR code on every Maggi packet; scanning it shows the manufacturing plant, batch, and best-before date, enabling targeted recalls without pulling entire production runs.
