Retailer
The final seller in the distribution chain who sells directly to the consumer, ranges from kiranas to modern supermarkets.
Full definition
A retailer is the final point of sale in the distribution chain, the shop, stall, or store from which the consumer actually buys. Retailers range from tiny footpath vendors to modern hypermarkets. In India, the universe is dominated by kirana stores (~12 million) with a growing layer of Modern Trade chains and a separate HoReCa channel.
For a brand, retailers are the final tollbooth before the consumer. Retailer classification (by volume tier, footfall, category strength), beat planning, and scheme design all revolve around understanding the retail universe. A well-mapped retail base is a brand's most valuable distribution asset.
Modern order management platforms give retailers a mobile app to place orders, verify deliveries via OTP-based PoD, track their running ledger, and see live schemes, replacing paper registers and phone calls.
Real-world example
A dairy brand's retailer universe in Pune might include 5,000 kiranas, 80 modern trade outlets, 200 HoReCa accounts, and 300 milk booths.
