A small-scale distribution intermediary appointed under a distributor to extend reach into areas the main distributor cannot efficiently service directly.

Full definition

A sub-stockist is a lightweight distribution node that sits below the main distributor in the channel hierarchy. Sub-stockists are appointed specifically to extend market coverage into areas that are too remote, too fragmented, or too low-volume for the main distributor's delivery infrastructure to reach profitably. They typically operate from a small godown or even the back of a shop, holding 2-3 days of fast-moving SKUs.

In rural India, sub-stockists are the lifeline of distribution. A dairy distributor in a district headquarter town may have 5-8 sub-stockists in surrounding talukas, each covering 50-100 village shops that no delivery vehicle from town could reach daily. The sub-stockist buys from the distributor at a margin of 2-4% below MRP and sells to retailers at the standard retail margin, making his living on the spread.

From a brand's perspective, the challenge with sub-stockists is data visibility, they are one step further from the brand's systems. Modern DMS platforms extend order capture and stock tracking to sub-stockists via simple mobile apps, closing this visibility gap.
