Batch Number

A unique identifier assigned to a specific production run, enabling traceability of all units manufactured together under identical conditions.

Full definition

A batch number (also called lot number) is the identifier assigned to a group of products manufactured together in a single production run under identical conditions, same raw materials, same machine, same shift. In Indian food distribution, batch numbers are mandatory under FSSAI labelling regulations and form the foundation of traceability: if a quality issue is discovered, the batch number lets the manufacturer pinpoint exactly which units are affected and trigger a targeted recall rather than pulling the entire product line.

For dairy distributors, batch discipline is especially critical because every batch has a different manufacturing date and expiry date. A distributor receiving three deliveries of the same SKU in a week has three active batches in the godown. FEFO compliance requires dispatching the earliest-expiry batch first, and that's only possible when batch numbers are tracked in the system, not just printed on the pack.

Modern order management and distribution tracking platforms capture batch numbers at every handoff, inward, storage, picking, dispatch, and delivery, creating a complete chain-of-custody record for audit and compliance.

Real-world example

Batch B240115-PUN on Amul Taaza 500ml indicates production on 15 Jan 2024 at the Pune plant; when a quality complaint arose, Amul traced the issue to this specific batch and recalled only 4,200 units instead of the entire SKU.
