FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India)
The apex regulatory body under the Ministry of Health that governs food safety, quality standards, labelling, and licensing for all food businesses operating in India.
Full definition
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is the statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, responsible for regulating and supervising food safety across the country. Every entity involved in manufacturing, processing, packaging, storing, distributing, or selling food in India falls under FSSAI's jurisdiction. For distribution businesses, FSSAI compliance is non-negotiable: operating without a valid FSSAI license invites penalties of up to Rs 5 lakh and potential imprisonment.
FSSAI sets standards for food labelling (including mandatory declaration of manufacturing date, expiry date, batch number, nutritional information, and allergens), shelf life validation, storage conditions, hygiene practices, and traceability requirements. The 14-digit FSSAI license number must appear on every packaged food product sold in India.
For dairy and perishable distributors, FSSAI's cold chain guidelines are particularly stringent: milk must be stored and transported at 2-4°C, and any break in the cold chain is a violation. Modern distribution tracking systems with temperature monitoring help distributors maintain auditable compliance records.
Real-world example
During a surprise FSSAI inspection at a distributor godown in Hyderabad, inspectors checked cold storage temperatures, FSSAI license display, and batch-wise expiry records for all dairy products in stock.
