Tetra Pak

An aseptic, multi-layer carton packaging system that enables long-life storage of liquid foods like milk, juice, and buttermilk without refrigeration.

Full definition

Tetra Pak is a proprietary aseptic packaging technology made of six layers — polyethylene, aluminium, and paperboard — that creates an airtight, light-proof barrier around liquid food products. When combined with UHT processing, Tetra Pak packaging enables milk, juices, lassi, and buttermilk to remain safe at ambient temperatures for 6-9 months without preservatives or refrigeration.

In India, Tetra Pak has become synonymous with premium packaged dairy and beverages. Brands like Amul, Mother Dairy, Paper Boat, and Real Juice rely on Tetra Pak for products distributed to remote geographies or through e-commerce, where maintaining the cold chain is impractical or uneconomic. Tetra Pak products typically carry a higher MRP (Rs 25-30 per litre for milk vs Rs 22-25 for pouched) but save significantly on cold-chain logistics costs.

From a distribution standpoint, Tetra Pak products are a dream — they can be stacked in standard ambient warehouses, shipped via regular freight, and follow standard FIFO rotation with comfortable lead times. This makes them ideal for wholesaler-led distribution in Tier 2-4 markets.

Real-world example

Amul Taaza 1-litre Tetra Pak cartons are distributed to over 50,000 retail outlets in North-East India where cold-chain infrastructure is sparse, leveraging the 6-month ambient shelf life.
