The percentage of planned delivery stops a vehicle actually visits in the correct sequence, a core logistics discipline metric.

Route adherence measures whether delivery vehicles follow the route plan they were given, in terms of stops visited, sequence followed, and time spent per stop. Formula: (planned stops actually visited in planned sequence / total planned stops) x 100. High route adherence correlates directly with on-time delivery, fill rates, and cold chain preservation.
Poor adherence almost always has a root cause: over-loaded routes, bad drop sequencing, driver shortcuts to finish early, or plain non-compliance. Without measurement, drivers optimize for their own comfort rather than the customer.
A distribution tracking system with GPS and geofencing auto-calculates route adherence per trip, flags deviations in real time, and feeds the data into driver scorecards.
Real-world example
A van was planned to hit 25 stops in sequence; it hit 24 in the right order and skipped one, route adherence of 96%.
