GSTIN
A 15-character unique identifier assigned to every GST-registered business in India.
Full definition
GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is the 15-character alphanumeric identifier issued to every business registered under GST. The first two digits represent the state code, the next ten are the PAN of the entity, and the remaining three are an entity code, check digit, and default Z. Every GST invoice must carry both the supplier's and the recipient's GSTIN when both are registered businesses (B2B).
A business operating across multiple states requires a separate GSTIN per state, because GST is destination-based. A dairy brand with plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka holds three GSTINs and files returns for each separately.
Accurate GSTIN capture is critical because mis-stated GSTINs cause e-invoice rejection and blocked input credit for the buyer. Order management platforms validate GSTINs in real time against the government portal during customer onboarding.
Real-world example
A GSTIN like 27AAAPL1234C1ZV decodes as: 27 = Maharashtra, AAAPL1234C = PAN, 1 = entity code, Z = default, V = check digit.
